Spring update from a Eureka! planting in Oregon with Jonathan! From disease management to overwintering mites, we cover it all. Field work is well underway – with the primary focus being pruning for disease management. Mechanical pruning, a cultural practice done in Oregon, takes the first eyes off the plants. These first growths are typically infected with downy and/or powdery mildew, and removing these initial sprouts stops the disease from spreading. Eureka! from the Hopsteiner breeding program, is both powdery and downy mildew tolerant, meaning less pruning and fungicides are needed to grow this variety. Not only is Eureka! an industry leading alpha variety but has exciting dry hop applications as well. With inputs such as fungicides and insecticides being two major contributors to environmental impact, breeding hop varieties with natural resistance is key to lowering our carbon footprint. It’s that time again! Around 15,000 new seedlings go through our mildew screening every year and only the resistant move on. Seedlings are placed in a controlled greenhouse with mildew infected plants for around two weeks. After they are exposed for that period of time, our breeding team assesses each seedling for natural resistance, and only the plants that are not infected move on to the next stage of evaluation. This crucial step in our breeding process helps identify the strongest of the group, as a natural resistance to downy and powdery mildew means that we will require less fungicides in the field – a natural way we are reducing our carbon footprint. It’s a long, manual process, but the benefits are huge.

We’re growing! 🌱🚜 News from the farm – we've just added two new greenhouses to our growing operations, and we couldn’t be more excited about the possibilities they bring. With their addition, we’re expanding our capacity to propagate a wider variety of hops than ever before. Why does this matter? With this new space we’ll be able to experiment with and cultivate more hop varieties, pushing the boundaries of flavor and aroma in the existing market. From classic favorites to exciting new hybrids, these greenhouses will be nurturing the next generation of hops. Cheers to growth, innovation, and the endless possibilities ahead! 🍻
